Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22000)

Aligned with the ISO Management System and ISO Harmonised Structure, the Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC 22000) is an internationally accepted certification scheme for the entire food and feed supply chain, from farms and food processing facilities to packaging, transport, and other production sites. More than 32,000 organisations worldwide are certified by FSSC 22000 Certification scheme. 

The Global Standard for Food Safety System Certification focuses on: 

  • Strengthening the licensing process and therefore the integrity programme 
  • Complying with GFSI Benchmarking Requirements (Version 2020.1) 
  • Including the most recent Board of Stakeholders list of selections and continual improvement process 

Food Safety System Certification and GFSI 

FSSC 22000 is recognised by Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), one of world’s largest coalitions of consumer goods corporates and businesses. Applying for FSSC 22000 Certification is the logical next step for ISO 22000 certified facilities who are eager to upgrade their certification to a GFSI-recognised standard. 

Food Safety System Certification Version 5.1 

FSSC 22000 currently adopts Version 5.1, which was published in October 2022. FSSC Version 5.1 covers multi-site certification, product design and development, as well as food safety culture. 

Food Safety System Certification Version 6 

FSSC 22000 Certification Version 6 was published in April 2023. FSSC Version 6 incorporates the latest requirements of ISO 22003-1:2022 and strengthens the connection to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

The key changes in FSSC Version 6 are: 

  • Changes in scope categories:
  • Retained with Changes: CI, CII, CII, CIV, D (D1 is now only D), E, FI, G (no longer with GI and GII), I and K 
  • Removed: AI, AII, DIIa, DIIb 
  • Added: BIII, C0, FII 
  • Requirements for organisations to be audited 
  • Scheme interpretation articles are included in the Scheme (Part 2, Section 2.2) and are available to CBs in MyFSSC 
  • CBs will communicate relevant interpretation articles with (certified) organisations, as necessary 
  • Strengthened several FSSC 22000 additional requirements 
  • Several new requirements in clauses 2.5.8, 2.5.9, 2.5.15, 2.5.16 and 2.5.17

Food Safety System Certification process
