Defining Vegan Food:

The regulations define "vegan food" comprehensively, encompassing food items, additives, flavourings, enzymes, and carriers, as well as processing aids that entirely exclude products of animal origin throughout production and processing stages.

  • Restrictions on Marketing: The regulations strictly prohibit the manufacturing, packaging, selling, offering for sale, marketing, distribution, or import of any food as vegan unless it complies with the stipulated requirements.
  • Animal Testing Prohibition: Vegan food products must not have undergone animal testing for any purpose, aligning with ethical standards unless specifically mandated by regulatory authorities.

Production and Processing Requirements:

Regulatory Compliance and Approvals:

  • Application Submission: Food Business Operators are required to submit a detailed application to the relevant licensing authority, providing all necessary information in the specified format outlined by the Food Authority.
  • Import Certification: The regulations mandate that no vegan food products shall be imported without a certificate issued by recognized authorities of exporting countries, conforming to the specified format accepted by the Authority.

Potential Vegan Logo Guidelines:

The Food Authority retains the discretion to specify guidelines for the approval of a vegan logo, further enhancing transparency and aiding consumers in identifying certified vegan products.

European union regulation

Directive 2011/96/EU defines vegetarian and vegan claims for food labeling, specifies requirements for ingredient lists and allergen information, and prohibits misleading claims or the use of terms like "lacto-vegetarian" for vegan products. Some EU member states have additional regulations, such as the UK's Vegan Trademark scheme.
