Things to know about PABA

Para-amino benzoic acid (PABA) is commonly known as vitamin B10. PABA is a white crystalline chemical found in the folic acid vitamin and also in several foods such as whole grains, eggs, brewer's yeast, milk, organ meat, mushrooms, spinach and many others. It is an organic compound also produced by the chemical industry for supplements and lotions.

It is not an essential nutrient nor exactly a vitamin, yet it is considered as a part of the vitamin B complex. Certain bacteria present in human gut can also synthesize the compound. PABA then assists in the production of folate.

Pros and cons related to PABA

PABA when taken as supplement, can benefit hair and skin. PABA supplements are available in powder, extract, pills and also as topical application forms.

In the past, it was a common ingredient in sunscreen, as it blocks UVB rays. Limited research also suggests that PABA supplements may help darken grey hair and improve skin issues that involve tissue build up and hardening.

While topical applications and most supplements are considered generally safe, the effects of PABA are not fully understood. High doses may lead to harmful side effects.

Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to the topical application of PABA. High doses of oral supplements may damage the kidneys and liver.

Since 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that PABA is no longer generally recognized as safe and effective for use in sunscreen. PABA is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth in high doses. PABA is a banned ingredient in health supplements and Nutraceutical as per FSSAI
