Standards and regulations

The FSSAI has issued the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017, which lay down the requirements for the production, processing, labelling, and certification of organic food products. The FSSAI regulations recognize two systems of certification for organic food products in India:

National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP): This is a government-run certification program that is implemented by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Participatory Guarantee System for India (PGS-India): This is a community-based certification program that is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Both the NPOP and PGS-India certification programs are based on the following principles:

  • Prohibition of the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and other agrochemicals.
  • Prohibition of the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  • Maintenance of soil fertility and biodiversity.
  • Humane treatment of animals.

To be certified as organic, food products must be subjected to an inspection by an accredited certification body under either the NPOP or PGS-India program. Once certified, the products can be labelled as "organic" and can use the India Organic logo.

The FSSAI regulations also lay down the requirements for the labelling of organic food products. All organic food products must be labelled with the following information:

  • The name and address of the producer or importer.
  • The name and address of the certification body.
  • The certification number.
  • The production method (NPOP or PGS-India).
