Water testing

Sidebar Image

Water is the most vital component of all living beings whether humans, animals or plants, all of them need water for their survival. Water is the second most important element after air for survival. According to the data released by surveys only 3% of the water on earth is fit for consumption.

Now-a-days water is getting affected in a very large scale due to pollutants or contaminants released by industries or through households which include heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria. Agricultural activities also contribute to the water contamination as chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides enter into ground water through leaching. The industrial units release large amounts of gasses and heavy elements such as sodium bicarbonate, iron, zinc, carbon dioxide, sulphate, chloride, fluoride could prove to be fatal for human health.

What parameters are involved in testing the quality of water?

  • Chloride ion
  • Ammonia
  • Nitrite
  • Nitrate
  • Phosphate
  • Hardness
  • Biological Oxygen Demand

Types of water testing

  • Bacteria tests - E coli, Salmonella, Total Coliform and thereof
  • Mineral tests - chlorine and chloride, nitrate and nitrite, lead, copper, iron, zinc, potassium, and sodium.
  • Ph testing
  • Other tests - conductivity, Odor, sediment, and turbidity
  • Radioactive Materials

Alpha emitters

Beta emitters

Characteristics of safe water:

Safe drinking water should have the following microbiological, chemical and physical qualities:

  • Free of pathogens
  • Low in concentrations of toxic chemicals
  • Clear
  • Tasteless and colourless (for aesthetic purposes)
