World Environment Day

Ecosystem Restoration

Ecosystem restoration implies "assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed naturally or by human activities". It also includes conservation of the ecosystems those are fragile or still intact. People should not take it for granted and need to eradicate pressures on environment.

Ecosystem restoration can happen through the involvement of citizens, governments like Growing trees, greening cities, rewilding gardens, changing diets or cleaning up rivers and coasts.

Significance of World Environment Day

The main idea of celebrating this day across the globe is to respect and acknowledge everything that the environment has given us and to take the pledge that we will protect it. With the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic going on for over a year and people being confined to indoors, the environment and mother earth seem to have benefitted slightly. In the absence of human activities because of coronavirus-induced lockdown, nature is getting time to clean itself. On this day, governments and citizens focus their efforts on a particular environmental issue to generate awareness.

Activities

The UN General Assembly has proclaimed the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration by over 70 countries all over the globe. The UN Decade runs from 2021 through 2030, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the UN collaboratively planning this Un Decade as a strong, broad-based global movement.
